Belstone and the Origins of our Website
Belstone - a village of approximately 250 people - is situated on the northern edge of Dartmoor, Devon, and is a popular place for walkers to begin their moorland treks or for visitors just to enjoy the peace and tranquility to be found here.
Although there is no longer a village shop, or regular bus service, the village has a very active community life, which attracts many people from outside the village to join in. In 2006, Belstone became involved in a "Green Village" initiative, in partnership with WestDen and the Centre for Sustainable Futures at Plymouth University. It was part of a project, initiated by WestDen, to look into the way people live and how their lives affect the environment around them and a steering group was set up, comprising members of the village community and representatives from Westden and Plymouth University. One of the outcomes of the project was the setting up and funding of this website and of the village newsletter - both of which are ways of communicating information and support both within Belstone and the wider community.
Our thanks go to Geoff Hodgkinson for setting up the website for us and for supporting us in rewriting the site following the trashing by hackers, just before Christmas 2010. Without his patience and constant support, there would be no website.
