The Belstone Green Village Project

The Belstone Green Village Initiative aims to:

provide opportunities and resources for the people of Belstone to explore the idea of a greener and more sustainable village now and for future generations.

History of the Project

The Project developed following a talk from Westden at our Annual Parish Meeting. They were keen to set up a pilot project which encouraged a village community to look into sustainability issues and, in partnership with Westden and Plymouth University’s Centre for Sustainable Futures, interested villagers formed a steering group.

In September 2006 an initial questionnaire was delivered to all homes in the village asking people to respond with information about everyday practices such as shopping, getting to work, heating the home, etc. with  a section specifically for the young people. Analysis of results was used to inform future events and an Awards for All Grant was received for running costs such as speakers, newsletters, booking meeting rooms, etc.

The steering group has worked hard to take the project to as wide a group of villagers as possible, organising a range of events that would encourage people with different interests to take part. These include a trip to a Forest Garden, lunches with speakers on a variety of pertinent topics, a 1940s Lunch, energy audits of some Belstone houses, a biodiversity audit of Belstone and “A Taste of Devon” day of cooking using local, organic produce.

Wider benefits for the long-term sustainability of the community include the formation of a Belstone Youth Group – which includes a group currently working on an environmental film based in Belstone – the setting up of a website and monthly newsletter to keep everyone in touch. There is also the possibility of a community hydro project in the village.
