Okehampton and District Twinning Association
By RJH

February 18, 2010:

The Association is supported by a broad range of people from a wide radius around Okehampton and its surrounding villages. People of all ages – singles, couples and families – take part in the alternate August Bank Holiday visit or hosting as well as the fund-raising and social events through the year.

There is no better way of getting to know the real culture of any nation than by staying in people’s homes and this is what happens when you take part in the Twinning between Okehampton and Craon, with many of us making lifelong friends with our French families. It also provides an ideal opportunity for both primary and secondary school pupils to experience French culture with their families. Whichever side of the Channel we are meeting, there are never any barriers

between the young people, who soon take life in their stride and pick up enough “Franglais” to have great fun together. As for the adults – they soon find that good food, the odd glass of wine and a simple French/English dictionary soon overcomes any language barrier! For those who speak French or are learning it in school, it is an ideal way to practise speaking it in real, everyday situations. The perfect way to learn or improve a language!

The ‘Twinners’ always welcome new members and, as this year is our turn to receive our Craon guests, we would love to have more people as hosts this August Bank Holiday weekend. There is always plenty of support from fellow ‘Twinners’ with a programme of activities over the weekend and also the opportunity  to spend time alone with your guests or to join with others, by your own arrangement, so there is no need to worry about how you will entertain your guests.

If you think you might be interested in taking part in any of the Twinning activities or would like to find out more about the Association and its activities, why not talk to Robin or Edwina Hill on 01837840332 edwinarobinhill@btinternet.com or just call into Andrews Corner, Skaigh Lane, Belstone, for a chat.
